Doug was the oldest of five Dwyre brothers, all sons of Col. Douglas Golding Dwyre and Eleanor Marie Dwyre. He graduated from West Point, and served during the Korean War as a pilot instructor in the U.S. Air Force. He left the military intending to enter a Jesuit Seminary, but thought better of it after sampling the rigors of the Jesuit order, which he said far exceeded those of West Point. He then married, had several children, and enjoyed a long career in the aerospace industry. He retired tp the Pacific Northwest and died on April 20, 2011 at age the age of 78 in Vancouver, Washington. Burial was arranged by Cascadia Cremation & Burial Services. There is an online Memorial for Doug by the West Point Graduate Association.
