Son of Joseph Bascom and Matilda Noble; married Sophia Hebner 20 Jan 1845 in Whtiby, Ontario; Charles was a farmer in Grant Township, St. Clair County, Michigan.

Although he lived in Ontario, Canada, at the time of the American Civil War, Charles enlisted in Co. C. of the 11th Michigan Infantry, giving his residence as St. Joseph County, Michigan. His place of enlistment was Sturgis, Michigan.
Enlisted: August 28, 1861
Discharged: February 25, 1863

The actual date for his migration to Michigan was about 1868, so it seems that Charles fought in the Civil War as a Canadian (although he was born in New York State), and brought his family to Sanilac County, Michigan, after the war's end. There is a GAR medallion on his gravesite, which is also listed in Don Harvey's database, Michigan in the Civil War.
