RAYMOND ARTIE BIVENS
1912- 1991
Raymond Artie Bivens was born November 7, 1912, near Sardis, in Hardin County, TN., the oldest child of Dudley Terry and Anna Josephine Newman Bivens. When he was five years old the family moved to Dyer County, and it was there that he professed faith in Christ and joined Palestine Methodist Church, in Bruceville, near Halls.
Artie graduated from Halls High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1931. Very soon after graduation he felt a clear call from God to enter the Christian ministry. He struggled with the call for four years during which time he taught school.

While attending Lambuth College, Artie married Lillian Juanita Pugh, also a Lambuth student, on September 8, 1939.

She was his partner in service throughout their ministry. He graduated from Lambuth in 1940 with a B.A. Degree and from Vanderbilt University in 1944 with a B.D. (M. Div.) Degree. Artie and Juanita had one son, Robert Terry, born May 27, 1950.

Brother Bivens joined The Memphis Annual Conference in 1940, was ordained Deacon in 1942 and ordained Elder in 1944. A kind and loving man, he served faithfully and itinerated throughout the conference for forty-two and one half years: 1938 Randolph Circuit; 1939 Baker's Chapel-Shady Grove; 1940 Baker's Chapel-Fairview; 1941 in school; 1944 Grand Junction; 1951 Henderson; 1954 Davant Avenue; 1956 Collierville; 1960 Clinton; 1962 Trenton; 1965 Longview Heights; 1967 Calvary Longview; 1971 Greenland Heights; 1973 Greenland Davant; 1975 Calvary-Trinity; and 1977 Hays Avenue, which relocated under his leadership and became Aldersgate in 1980. He took the retired relation in 1981, and then served Baker's Chapel for four years, 1982-1986.

In addition to his pastoral ministry, Artie Bivens served as a Memphis Conference statistician for 25 years, Conference Minutes Secretary for 7 years, and as Secretary of The Memphis Annual Conference for 8 years. He was chairman of the Conference Board of World Peace for 8 years. Artie's patience and hard work were instrumental in helping several churches through difficult transitions and in leading three churches through major building construction.

A man of community, Artie was a Boy Scout leader and a member of several service clubs and fraternal orders, including The Lions Club, Rotary International, and The Order of Free Masonry.

In retirement, Artie and Juanita enjoyed Jiving in Jackson, participating in church activities in the district and at Aldersgate, socializing with longtime colleagues and friends, supporting Lambuth College, and having son, Terry, nearby.

Artie died February 10, 1991, and his funeral service was February 12, 1991, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Ministers who led the service were Reverend Jim Cooper, Pastor; Reverend Marcus Gurley, retired; Reverend Homer Johns, retired; and Dr. Jerry B. Carr, District Superintendent. Interment was at Friendship Cemetery, Friendship, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Juanita, and their son, Terry, both of Jackson; three brothers, Elmer Bivens, Friendship; Eugene Bivens, Halls; Neill Bivens, Jackson; two sisters Mrs. Sue LaMuska, Jackson; and Mrs. Effie Phillips, Huntingdon.
