U.S. Congressman, Kentucky Governor. He graduated from Centre College, in 1855, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced to practice law in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. In 1859, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861 and was reelected to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving (1873-75). He then resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat the 31st Governor of Kentucky, serving (1891-95). After his term he continued practice law until his death at age 68.
