U.S. Senator. Born in Johnston Hall, England, he immigrated to America with his mother to Newport, Rhode Island, in 1794. He moved to New York, engaged in the mercantile business, was a member of the New York State Senate (1820-25) and was Mayor of Albany, (1821-24, 28-29). In 1829, he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Martin Van Buren, serving until 1833. He retired from politics at the end of his term.
