MRS VERNA HICKENLOOPER DIES IN D.C.

WASHINGTON - Mrs. Verna Hickenlooper, the wife of former Iowa senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper, died at Georgetown university Hospital here Wednesday night where she was being treated for a coronary condition.

Mrs. Hickenlooper, 73, was born in Lansing, Iowa.

Hickenlooper, who settled here when his fourth term in the Senate expired in 1969, married the former Verna E. Bensch in 1927. They had two children, Mrs. Russell Oberlin of Des Moines and a son David B. Hickenlooper of Bloomfield.

Hickenlooper served two terms in the House of Representatives as a representative of Linn County. He served as Iowa lieutenant governor from 1939-43 and governor from 1943-1945. In 1944 he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.

(on page 4B of the same issue:)

Along with thousands of other Iowans who knew her we mourn the passing of one of the loveliest women ever to serve as the state's First Lady, Mrs. Bourke B. Hickenlooper.

Sh was a charming individual and served as First Lady in a period when that was a most difficult assignment, for in those days (1943-45) Iowa didn't provide its governors with a mansion in which to entertain and to live. Our sympathy goes out to her husband, former senator and former governor Hickenlooper.

Gov. Robert Ray will head a delegation of state officials, including Auditor Lloyd Smith, Treasurer Maurice Baringer and Secretary of Agriculture L. B. Liddy, attending services for Mrs. Hickenlooper at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian church in Cedar Rapids.
