Woman, In Fit Of Insanity Locks Doors And Sets Fire To Oil-Saturated House
A horrible tragedy was enacted Monday eight miles northeast of Braddock, when Mrs. Axel Johnson, the wife of a well-known farmer, at Pursian lake, locked herself and six small children in the house and after nailing down the windows, saturated the floor with kerosene, set fire to the house and deliberately burned herself and children to death. Mr. Johnson, who was working in a field some distance away, and several neighbors saw the smoke and rushed to the scene, but were too late to render any assistance. The mother and babies were found in the corner of the living room, under the smouldering mass, where they had huddled to meet their death.
Coroner Dodge, of Kidder county was immediately notified and has started an investigation leading up to the facts of the tragedy.
It is probable that temporary insanity is the cause of the deed, as no other reason can be found that would induce her to commit the act. The husband says that when he left for work in the morning his wife was apparently happy and that no domestic trouble had been had. He is nearly frantic with grief and for a time fears were entertained for his sanity. It was one of the saddest affairs ever enacted in this vicinity and the sympathy for the postrated husband and father is deep and far reaching.
