U.S. Senator. Moving with his family to Washington, in 1899, he graduated from the Tacoma Law School, in 1911, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Tacoma, Washington. He was special deputy prosecuting attorney of Pierce County, in 1912, corporation counsel of the Port of Tacoma, (1918-32) and a member of the Washington State House of Representatives, (1923-24). In 1932, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until his resignation in 1934. He was appointed a judge of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Judicial Circuit, serving (1944-56) and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 87.
