Virginia Lee (Watson) Drowns, 90, John Knox Village, Lee's Summit, MO, passed away December 19, 2004, at Lee's Summit Hospital following surgery.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 23, at the Langsford Funeral Home. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Virginia was born November 28, 1914, in Kansas City, MO, the youngest of 5 daughters to Charles & Ella Watson. She married Louis Drowns and lived most of her life in Kansas City North. She had two sons, Michael T. and David B. Drowns. She moved into John Knox Village to be closer to three of her sisters who lived there.

Virginia attended Paseo High School, received a teaching certificate from Kansas City Teachers College. She taught elementary school in the Kansas City School District, and was supervising teacher for student teachers. Virginia was active in the North Kansas City Hospital Auxiliary and a member of Avondale Methodist Church, an early member of Old Pike Country Club, and contributing member to North Kansas City Hospital.

Virginia and Louis were building their new home in Briarcliff Hills in 1941, when the news announced the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was very active in her younger years with tennis, swimming, golf, traveling, and horseback riding. Many were in attendance of her surprise 90th birthday party at John Knox Village, hosted by daughters-in-law, Linda Drowns, and Rosemary Graham, Fairfax, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Barbara Long, Nelle Watson, and Charlene Watson; her youngest son David B. Drowns; and her husband Louis Drowns.

She is survived by her 105 year old sister, Gladys Beckett, of John Knox Village; her oldest son, Michael T. Drowns and wife Linda E., of Parkville, MO; a grandson, Matthew D. Drowns and wife Melissa, of Carlsbad, CA; granddaughter Holly L. Ridge and husband Jerry D., of Centerview, MO; and great-grandson, 5 year old Hayden L. Ridge; granddaughter, Michelle R. Allmon, (also a teacher like her greatgrandfather, grandmother, and mother) and husband Adam, of Minnetonka, MN; grandson John M. Drowns, a Junior at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ; nephew Theodore C. Beckett and wife Daisye and their 5 grown children and spouses, all living in the Kansas City area; niece Barbara J. Vilips and husband Vess, of Stewart, FL; and her calico cat, Maggie. Virginia will be missed very much.
