Santiago was born and raised in Victoria, where he graduated in 1967 from Victoria High School.
He enlisted in the Marines 15 June 1967, at a San Antonio Recruiting Office.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 7 December 1967, he was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th
Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Santiago died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile small arms fire, during a ground assault on LZ Winchester in the vicinity of Trinh Hin Valley and 9 kilometers west northwest of Thon Khe (The Rockpile) while participating in Operation Scotland II.
Santiago was single and served his country for 2 years, 2 months and 25 days and was KIA #32,702.
He had been in Vietnam for 9 months and 2 days.
Santiago was 20 years, 6 months and 28 days old.
Survived by his parents, Santiago, Sr and Francisca "Frances" (Garcia) Dejoyas Adames, a sister; Sylvia and three brothers; Daniel, Rudy and Raymond all of Route 2, Box 257-I, Victoria, Texas and his girlfriend; Janie Rodriguez of Star Route, Inez, Texas.
