Lt. Col. William Frank Plyler

Asheville - Lt. Col. William Frank Plyler, USAF Retired, 85, of Asheville, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, in Arbor Terrace. He was a native of Iredell County and the son of the late Charles and Naomi Trivette Plyler.
He was a graduate of Phieffer Junior College and Western Carolina Teachers' College where he was president of his class from both colleges. He was a student in the college of mechanical engineering in Honolulu and was serving in the 35th Medical Division at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He graduated from OCS (Officers Candidate School) at Camp Barkley in 1943. After assignment to the Amphibian Engineers, he received amphibious training at Fort Ord, Calif., before sailing for the southwest pacific. He retired from the USAF Reserve in 1960 as a lieutenant colonel and retired from the United States Forestry Service in 1975. He was a private pilot and flight instructor and a member of Elkwood Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Alice Bennett Plyler on Nov. 28, 2003, and son, Gary Michael Plyler in 2005.
He is survived by his sons, William Frank Plyler II and his wife, Kathy, of Manteo and Robert Hansel Plyler and his wife, Anne, of Asheville; daughter-in-law, Anne Murphy Plyler of Georgetown, S.C.; brother, Paul Ernest Plyler of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Ave., Asheville.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim McRee officiating.
The graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Iotla Methodist Churchyard, Franklin, with military rites provided by VFW Post 7339.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to The Memory Assessment Clinic, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
