He is the son of Anne Marie Rettig and Georg Henrich Klinger of Germany. He came to the USA in 1830 with his parents and one brother. He married Martha Angeline Rhea on 28 Jun 1853 in Paris, Edgar Co., IL. They had two daughters. John served as an enlisted man ( Wagoner) with the 66th Inf. Reg. of IL.during the Civil War. He was a farmer and butcher. After the death of Martha in 1865, he married Mary E. "Mollie" Kitts on 15 Sep 1870. He died in his home in Paris on 1 Mar 1876 and buried in Edgar Cem. on 4 Mar 1876.
