Pioneer Tulsa Druggist Is Dead at 90

Leo Steinberg, 90, founder of Tulsa's first drug store chain, died today. He lived with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. McCartney of 924 S. Sandusky Ave. Mr. Steinberg came here from Lebanon, Mo., and bought a drug store at 206 S. Main St. He later expanded ownership to 12 drug stores which he sold to the Crown Drug Co. upon retiring in 1930. He began his drug store career as a boy in his native Lebanon, Mo. sweeping out and doing other jobs. He was graduated from the Northwestern School of Pharmacy in Chicago in 1893. He operated drug stores in Carthage, Mo, and Joplin before coming to Tulsa. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and Scottish and York Rite Masonic bodies here. Surviving in addition to the daughter are a son, R. C. of Broken Arrow; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Ninde Funeral Directors is in charge.

On the funeral notice is the date of the memorial service, Friday, January 11, 1963. Entombment is at the Rose Hill Mausoleum.

obit of Leo Steinberg, Lebanon, Mo, paper. This obit was supplied by his daughter and the [] remarks are corrections from her.

Mrs. J. M. Beard [Jessie Beard - wife of Albert Steinberg] of Lebanon has received word of the death of Leo Steinberg, 91, of Tulsa, who passed away about 6 p.m. Wednesday [He actually died about 1am according to his daughter.] Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Tulsa, with interment in a cemetery there by the side of his wife. Mr. Steinberg was reared in Lebanon and his life story is as fascinating as a Horatio Alger story. In his youth he worked as an apprentice pharmacist in the Sam Farrar drug store in Lebanon. He later graduated from the Northwestern University School of Pharmacy and then acquired a small share in a drug store at Joplin. From there he moved to Tulsa, Okla. [This account omits several years in Carthage, where his daughter and son were born.] Mr. Steinberg became the sole owner of 26 drug stores in Oklahoma and acquired controlling interest in 26 others. In 1928 he retired, selling his holdings to the Crown Drug Store chain for $2,500,000. [This is greatly exaggerated according to his daughter.]

He was married to a Lebanon school teacher, Miss Myrtle Collins, the daughter of a Methodist minister. She preceded him in death some years ago. Mr. Steinberg, the last of his family of five brothers and three sisters, retained a lifelong interest in the work of the Methodist Church.
