Obituary for Alston Mills
Lafayette GA Messenger
February 22, 1883
In memory of brother Alston Mills, who departed this life February 18th at his home in Cane Creek District, Walker County, Ga. He was born in North Carolina September 30th 1810 and was 72 years, four months, and thirteen days old when he died. He married Miss Nancy Jackson in Gwinnett County in 1833. He moved to Walker County many years ago.
Brother Mills was the father of eleven children, four boys, and seven girls. The boys all died in the war, and his two youngest daughters, Lyndia and Louisa, the wife of John Poe, died about two years ago.
He leaves a wife, 77 years of age, and five daughters, the wives of Wm. Roberta J M and R T Hall, Bud Hammon and Wash Lowry, with many friends to mourn his loss. But thanks be to the giver of life, we mourn not as those who have no hope.
Brother Mills obeyed the Gospel thirty years ago, and was baptized into the church of Christ where he ever since has walked worthy of the vocation wherewith he was called, and died in the triumph of a living faith, and said he was not afraid to die.
"An thus shall faith's consoling power
The tears of love restrain.
Oh, who that saw thy parting hour
Could wish thee here again.
Gently the passing spirit fled,
Sustained by grace divine;
Oh, may such grace on us be shed,
And make our end like thine."
Malcolm H. Hearn
Four sons: Hugh "Buddie", John, William Harrison, George Washington, all died in the Civil War
Alston and Nancy Mills are presumed to be buried in Hall Cemetery. My g-g-grandfather.
