William was in Co. B, 7th Regiment of Iowa, War of 1861 or what we call the Civil War. This is the memorial stone that was erected here by his son George H. Tannahill. It is next to his wife, Janette White Tannahill. When George went to Annapolis to bring William's body home to be buried with the family, he was told that no body, once it was buried in a National Cemetery, could be moved. He came home and had a memorial stone erected in Greenwood Cemetery, next to his son, James and little daughter, Ella, whom he had never seen because she was born after he left for the Civil War. Then he came to Iowa Union Cemetery where William's wife was and erected another stone.
