William Delbert Midgett, 73, native and former long time resident of Rodanthe, now of Redmond, Oregon and Yuma, Arizona, passed away on January 3, 2009, at his home in Yuma.

He was surrounded with love by his wife Annette, and his step-son and daughter-in-law, James and Pamela, at the time of his passing.

Mr. Midgett was born September 14, 1935 to Jethrow and Mamie Midgett in Rodanthe.

He retired from the United States Coast Guard in 1973 and went to work for the State of North Carolina Ferry Division in Manns Harbor. He also worked for the Pilot's Association of Maryland out of Norfolk, Va.

Mr. Midgett had many hobbies, but the one he loved most was to putter around in his shop. He was also involved with the VFW in Redmond. He spent many hours on his computer visiting with many friends from all corners of the world. He was able to meet most of those that he visited through the years and many condolences have come from around the world, from all of those who considered him a loved and cherished friend.

Mr. and Mrs. Midgett traveled the country as much as possible in their motor home. On their last road trip Mr. Midgett was honored at the Marine Ball on November 14 by more than 1,000 Marines for his service to his country. He was overwhelmed and proud.

All who have known him through the years love him because of his humility and respect for others. He was a very kind and gentle soul.

William is survived by his wife, Annette; six of his own children: Brent Midgett, Bruce Midgett and Bertha Midgett, all of Rodanthe, Bonnie Gray of Luray, Va., Rebecca Thomas of Avon, and Wilhelmina Grubbs of Salvo; six step-children: Jay of Colorado & Mexico, Jeff and Jermey of Redmond, James of 29 Palmsm Calif., Jennifer of Winnemucca, Nev., and Justin of Syracuse, N.Y; also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Gaskins of Rodanthe and Edith O'Neal of Ocracoke; and brother, George Midgett of Rodanthe; two aunts: Alice Bundy of Rodanthe and Jennetta Williams of Elizabeth City; and many nieces and nephews. William was loved by all those who knew him and he will live in the memory of many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George Gilbert Midgett.

A memorial service will be held in Oregon in the spring and a memorial will be announced at a later date in NC. William's ashes will be held until the passing of his wife and then mixed together and placed in the ocean so they will be joined in eternity. At that time all military honors and flag ceremonies will be conducted.
