Born in Kliplev, Aabenraa, Denmark. He served in the Danish Army during the second Slessvig-Holstein War. Seeing no end to the border feuding with Germany, and little opportunity for his children in Denmark, he resolved to send his children to the United States. And so in small groups, most of his children were sent to the US. Finally, his daughters and son in Humboldt, sent for him, their mother and their youngest sister.

NOTE that the gravemarker shown here incorrectly spells the family's surname. This is an error that Anna Jacobsen Carlson notes in her 1941 Jacobsen Genealogy.

NOTE: that here in 1860, Asmus Jacobsen is noted as Asmus Asmussen, age 19. Though it is true that Asmus Jacobsen's sister Trinke, married Lorenz Asmussen, Trinke's son Asmus is only 8 years of age in 1860. Lorenz, born in 1822, is likely too old to have a brother who is 19. We believe that Trinke is Lorenz's first wife, and so the unproven theory here is that "Asmus Asmussen" is actually Trinke's brother Asmus Jacobsen at age 29, 6 years after the first war with Germany, just 2 years before his marriage, and 4 years before the coming war with Germany.
