WINCHESTER >> A Winsted community event was held July 18 to clear brush and overgrowth at the historic Danbury Quarter Cemetery located on Danbury Quarter Road, Winchester Center.
The event was organized by Maureen Golas Markure and Lynn Schrock, members of the Brooks-Green Woods Daughters of the American Revolution.
The cemetery was used during the 1800’s and is the final resting place for 60 souls. The town no longer maintains the cemetery as the Commission that oversaw the cemetery was disbanded in 2008.
Volunteers located graves for Revolutionary War Patriots Abram Andrews Sr, Daniel Andrews, Timothy Benedict, Phineas Griswold, and Rembert Tucker. Civil War Veteran graves were located for Charles Gilbert, George Hurlburt, William Hurlburt, and James Tuttle. American flags and flowers were planted on Veteran’s gravesites. Of interest to local residents, the cemetery has the graves of 17 children, including six children of John and Rebecca Benedict ranging from infant to six years old, and six children of Newman and Jane Gilbert, ranging in age from 6 months to 2 years old.
Additional DAR member volunteers included Lori Brady, Karen Brett, Dolores Smiley, Doris Lyng, Dianne Shotwell, Nancy Petro and Julie Vold.
Patriotic veteran volunteers included Bill Smith from the Winsted American Legion, and Dan Ward from the Winsted VFW.
Machinery and expertise were generously provided by Jay and Steven Newth from Total Estate Management. Other hard working volunteers included Richard Shotwell, Leah and Henry Ward, Evan Vold, Andy Brady, Phil Smiley, Alex Smith, Michael Schrock, and Michael Markure.
Donations and other assistance for the work day were provided by Winsted Feed and Seed, Winsted IGA, Torrington Lowes, Torrington Big Y, Winsted Dunkin Donuts, Winsted Oil, and Northwest Sporting Goods. Gravesite flags were provided by the Winsted VFW.
