Military Rites Held For Merlin Anderson
Funeral services, with full military rites under the auspices of the Knudtson-Mattison Post of the American Legion, were held Friday afternoon, July 16 for Paratrooper Merlin B. Anderson at Zion Lutheran church with the Rev. L. S. Borgen officiating. Burial was in the family lot in the church cemetery. The military escort from the Chicago Distribution Centery of the American Graves Registration Division who accompanied the body here, presented the flag which draped the casket to Pfc. Anderson's mother, Mrs. Martin Anderson. Pfc. Anderson, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Anderson was born Nov. 3, 1924 near Taylor. He was baptized in the Beaver Creek Lutheran church and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran church in Blair. He finished the Blair High school in 1944, his mother receiving his diploma at graduation as he was already in the army. He was inducted into service in December, 1943 and received his training at Camp Wolters, Texas and at Fort Benning, Ga., where, having chosen the Paratroopers branch of service, he won the right to wear the Boots and Wings of a Paratrooper. He was sent overseas in July, 1944, and was wounded in action in September of the same year. After a short period of hospitalization, he was sent back into action, where in the German "break through" he was again wounded, and died in an English hospital January 19, 1945.
