WILLIAM (WILHELM) GOTTLIEB NEUMANN
S/O CHRISTIAN FREDERICK AND CHRISTINA BREDON NEUMANN
BORN IN CLAUSDORF, GERMANY
Wilhelm (William) Gottlieb Neumann was born July 26, 1790, in Clausdorf, Germany. First wife, name unknown. They had three children - Lena, William L. and Gustav. His second wife, Catherine Kohl was born March 18, 1805, in Misenheim, Germany. They had eleven children - Hugo, Adolph, August, Lissette, Frederick, Valentine, Charles, Sophia, Jacob, Julius and Henry (in order of birth).
He was a merchant and an officer of high rank in the army. Because of his war record he was given a pension, which gave him security the rest of his life.
Believing there was greater opportunity in America for his children, and to keep his sons from being forced into compulsory military training, he decided to leave this security in Germany, take his wife and children and migrate to America. He loaded his wife, Catherine and children, and a few possessions on a sailing boat and landed in New Orleans. From there, they traveled up the Mississippi River to Quincy, Illinois, where his son, William L. Neumann met them. The son, who had preceded them to America, soon had his father, mother, brothers and sisters, established on a farm near his own. They arrived in 1857.
Life for them was difficult, because pioneering in America, at that time, involved many hardships, which they did not have to endure in Germany. While in Germany all of the sons learned a trade by apprenticeship, and to play a musical instrument. The mother, Catherine, insisted the children learn music, because her brother was a musician and taught music, thus the children had this great advantage. The brothers and sisters all had German Lutheran church training and they became good students of the Bible.
William Gottlieb Neumann died December 25, 1861 and Catherine Kohl Neumann, his second wife, died August 4, 1880. They were buried in Red Oak Cemetery, Henry County, near Cambridge, Illinois.
The Red Oak Cemetery is a perpetual care cemetery in which many members of the Neumann family are buried. It is surrounded by land still owned by Neumann descendants.
