Arthur "Art" Barth Jr., 74, of Jacksonville, formerly of Meredosia, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at St. John's Hospital. He was born April 14, 1928, near Bluffs, the son of Arthur Sr. and Ethel Gregory Barth. He married Helen "Peggy" Evans in 1952 in Jacksonville. A son, Alfred Ray Barth, preceded him in death. Mr. Barth worked at the Chrisman Elevator for 11 years, Urgas Bulk Agency in Quincy for seven years, then for Illico Gas Co. out of Bluffs Springs, retiring in 1986. He and his wife ran the Illico Filling Station in Meredosia from 1981-84. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. In 1952 he transferred to the Reserves, receiving his honorable discharge in 1955 as a sergeant. He was a past commander of Smerican Legion Post 516 in Meredosia and a past member of the Coonhunter Association of Scott County and Brown County. He was on the Meredosia City Board for 10 years. Survivors: wife, Helen; a sister, Dorothy (husband, Ruth) Wilkinson of Carthage, Miss., a stepsister, Abbie Craigmiles of Peoria; and several nieces and nephews. Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Schaefer-Cody Home in Meredosia. Burial: Oakland Cemetery in Meredosia.
