Deceased Name: OBIT - ADAMS , REDMOND THORNTON JR.

Redmond Thornton Adams , Jr., 84, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond T. and Eva Adams , his wife, Betty Lee Bryant Adams.

Mr. Adams was a 1940 honor graduate of Jefferson High School. He was a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Air Corps, where he was trained for fighter/bomber planes and was an instrument flight instructor. He was employed by the Norfolk & Western Railway for over 40 years, beginning as a stenographer in the Traffic Department and retiring as the Assistant Vice President of the Coal and Ore Traffic Department. He was qualified to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission and tariff rate cases.

During his lifetime he held memberships with First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church and most recently Salem Baptist Church. He had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir as well as various quartets. In his youth, he was a proud member of Boy Scout Troop 21. He was also associated with numerous organizations, including Lakeland Masonic Lodge, Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity and the Retired Officers Association. He loved to play golf and grew the biggest and best tomatoes in Roanoke.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen McLaurin and husband Jim, Betsy Williams and husband John, all of Roanoke, Susie Hanson and husband Hunter of Naples, Fla., Lee Hudson and husband Chris of Shawsville, Va.; grandchildren, Trey Stephenson of Charleston, S.C., Jay McLaurin and wife, Melanie of Jackson, Wyo., Scott McLaurin of Roanoke, Ann Hudson of Shawsville and Sally Rogers of Redmond, Wash.; sister, Dorothy Garrison and husband, Jack of Roanoke; special friend, Sheila Davis, whose help and companionship brought joy to the last eight years of his life.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday at Oakeys Roanoke Chapel with L. Gerald Carter, a long time family friend, officiating. Interment in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakeys Roanoke Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Rd., Suite 106A, Roanoke, Va. 24018.
