Artist. He was the prized student of Natsuo Kano, the most celebrated Japanese metal engraver artists of the 19th century. Zeshin Shibata, who was one of the most acclaimed lacquer artists in Japanese history, taught him painting. The title of "Imperial Court Artist" was bestowed upon him in 1913, following the granting of this rare honor to his two famous mentors.
