Assistant Radio Operator killed when his B-17 crashed on takeoff from Dyersburg Army Air Base, Tennessee. The bomber flew into a grove of trees 2,000 feet beyond the end of the runway and burst into flames, killing four crewmembers and seriously injuring four others. Two escaped without injury. Investigators believed the student pilot failed to monitor his instruments closely during the nighttime departure.
