Edgar was born on 04 APR 1886, the son of M.C. "Mack" Whitman and Martha "Mattie" A. (Colley) Whitman. Throughout his early years, he developed a talent for being an entertainer. By the time he was 12 years old, he was performing as a ventriloquist and magician. He was also a talented musician. His mother and father managed his entertaining career, while juggling his school, and helping around his father's barber shop. One day, in 1901, the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show passed through Danville and Edgar briefly joined the show, as a ventriloquist and musician. However, in 1903, his mother, Mattie, fell terminally ill and Edgar returned back to Danville and went to work, full time, in his father's barber shop. It was during this time, that he met Gracie Mae Hupp. Edgar and Gracie married in 1904 and had their first child, Mattie Cynthia, on 19 SEP 1905, followed by Naomi Hazel, in 1907, and Ruby Geraldine, in 1912. By 1913, Danville's "hey-day" was coming to a close, affecting the population, and Edgar's barber business. In 1913, sensing a better opportunity there, the family moved to Clarksburg, WV. Shortly after their arrival in Clarksburg, they had their first son, Daniel Jasper, in 1915, followed by Virginia Sue, in 1919. However, Edgar's "gypsy" spirit, and his aching for being something more than the town's barber, was cause for much marital friction. By 1929, Edgar left his wife and young family, for what he thought would be a more exciting life. Sometime, between 1933-1934, he and Gracie finally dissolved their marriage. For the next 13 years, between 1929 to 1942, Edgar moved around a lot, working odd jobs, and trying to find himself, as an entertainer but without success. He finally settled-down, in Richmond, VA., opened another barber shop, and remarried, to Margaret Burton. Edgar always possessed a huge personality and could light up a room with his presence. Sadly, the light went out on 09 DEC 1950.
