Arthur Clinton Cardwell, 88, died on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Rose of Ramona Home under the care of Vitas Hospice.
He was born in Le Mars, Iowa, and grew up in Sioux City. Arthur was in the Iowa National Guard for six years. During World War II he served with the 382nd Army Infantry Unit. He was an expert rifleman and army specialty anti-tank gunner.
Following his discharge, Arthur moved to Los Angeles and joined the Sheriff's Department. He served for 28 years before retiring as a sergeant in the detective bureau in 1975.
He moved to Ramona in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hazel, his son Jim, and his grandson Mike.
At Arthur's request, a private service will be held for family members only. He will be buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Arrangements have been made by Bonham Bros. & Stewart Mortuary.
