Mr. James B. "Big Jim" Burdett died May 17, 2004, in Nehalem at the age of 91.

Big Jim was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Gorie, Texas, to Albert and Maggie (Bowman) Burdett.

Mr. Burdett and Lora Lucille Tarpley, who was to be the mother of his four children, were united in marriage in 1934.

He farmed and made roads in Texas before moving to California in 1952. After working in the lumber industry for approximately 20 years, he retired to Chattanooga, Tenn., with his second wife, Catherine Meal, whom he had wed in 1963. He moved to Tucson, Ariz., for several years, living with his son, and then came to Nehalem, where he was an original resident of Nehalem Bay House.

Mr. Burdett enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, and bingo, and had been an avid reader before his eyesight failed. he was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and his primary joy in life was in sharing the Word of the Lord with others. Big Jim is remembered as a positive, energetic man who enjoyed life, despite his blindness.

He was preceded in death by Lora Lucille and Catherine in 1992, and is survived by four children, Benny Ray of Roach, Mo., Don Richard of Macon, Mo., James Clell of Tucson, Ariz., Linda Kay Fabian of Nehalem, and by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at Nehalem Bay House, Thursday, May 27, at 2 p.m. A private interment was to take place at Nehalem VFW Cemetery. Donations to Nehalem Bay House in his name would be gratefully accepted to fill the need of a lift van for the residents. Arrangements are under the care of Waud's Funeral Home.
