Sioux City Man

Herman, Neb., Will Honor Grandson of Its Namesake

Walton Herman, a 91 year old Sioux City bachelor, will be a guest of honor Saturday at the Herman, Neb., centennial celebration.

Mr. Herman is the grandson of David Herman, for whom the town was named in 1871. He will ride in the 11 a.m. parade Saturday and will attend a luncheon along with the Second District Congressman John Y. McCollister and other dignitaries.

The Sioux Cityan is believed to be the only living descendant of Dave Herman in this part of the country.

Dave Herman was the first conductor on the first train to run between Omaha and Herman and the new town borrowed his name for its own.

The centennial celebration will run three days, Friday through Sunday.

Herman, population approximately 335, is located in Washington County about 11 miles north of Blair, Neb.

Friday's activities at the centennial will include a kiddies' parade, baseball games, the burning of the rural fire district equipment mortgage, parachute jumps, a square dance, the opening performance of the Tri-County Rodeo, and the crowning of the rodeo queen. Gov. J.J. Exon and Public Defender Frank Morrison and their wives will attend.

Saturday's events will include the parade, a barbecue, a dance and a rodeo.

Sunday's schedule calls for united religious services in the city park, burial of a time capsule, finals of the baseball tournament, a water fight between area fire departments and the concluding performance of the rodeo.
