Eminent Confederate Veteran Answers Last Roll Call

At 1:40 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Wm,. A Greer passed away quietly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Belle Bradley, 214 Fountain Street, at the ripe age of 80 years and three weeks.

The funeral occurred from the residence at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. Dr. Copeland officiating interment at Hollywood.

Mr. Greer was of an eminent family, being a nephew of Alexander H. Stephens, vice president of the Southern Confederacy and of Judge Linton Stephens, the eminent Georgia jurist. He entered the Confederate army while quite young serving the last two years of the war under Lee, and to its close. He was present at the surrender of Lee at Appomattox.

He removed from Talberton [sic], Ga. with his family in 1866, settling in Howard county, Arkansas, moving thence fifteen years later to Hot Springs where he resided until his death. He was a pure and upright man in life, loved and respected by all who knew him and having no enemies. The immediate cause of death was an acute attack of la gripupe, which developed pneumonia. Prior to this attack he was remarkably strong for a man of his age. he was a devout man, a member of Central Methodist Church. Two sons, Stephen A and Lucien W. Greer also two daughters, Mrs. J.L. Wadley of Texarkana and Mrs,.Belle Bradley of this city survive him. All were present at the bedside except Mrs. Wadley. She and Mr. Wadley arrived last evening to attend the funeral.
