Pearl E. Backus, 77, formerly of 22 Wheeler Ave., died Tuesday at Cortland Memorial Nursing Facility after a brief illness.
A native of Rensselaer Falls, Mrs. Backus lived in Cortland four years. She was active in several citizens groups. A daughter, Lillian Hemingway, died in 1991.
Surviving are a son, Robert of Westfield, Mass.; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Chase Funeral Home, Syracuse . Burial will be in Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, 1520 South Ave.
Contributions may be made to Cortland Memorial Nursing Facility, Misty Glen Unit, 134 Homer Ave., Cortland 13045.
