Harvey J. Ashmore, 50, of Muscoda, was killed in the line of duty serving as a volunteer fireman at a Muscoda rural farm building fire on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 1989.

Mr. Ashmore was born on Jan. 8, 1939, at Mount Zion, Crawford County, the son of Lewis and Geraldine (Kast) Ashmore. He had been employed by the Village of Muscoda since 1985. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 until 1959. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the church choir, and was an 8-year member of the Muscoda Volunteer Fire Department. He was a WIAA official and he refereed area basketball and volleyball games, and umpired area baseball and softball games. He enjoyed University of Wisconsin-Madison athletics, especially Badger hockey.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Cindy (Michael) Spielman of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Vicki Mullins of Muscoda; three sons, Ronald (Mary) Ashmore of Muscoda, Allan (Cheryl) Ashmore of Martinsville, Ind., and Terry Ashmore of Rockford, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Wynolla (Robert) Kelley of Kenosha; six brothers, Norman (Donna) of Woodman, Avery (Charlotte) of Boscobel, Rodney (Ann) and Jeffrey (Marjorie), both of Norfolk, Va., Dee Ell (Terri) of LaCrosse, and Wayne (Terri) of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a half-brother, Conrad (Anita) Streeter of Muskogee, Okla. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, whom he kept in close contact with, Joshua, Dustin, Diona, Devin Ashmore, David Mullins, Linda, David Ashmore, and Nicole, Sarah, Miya Spielman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. in the United Presbyterian Church in Muscoda. Reverend David J. Hankins officiated with burial in the Blue River Cemetery. Godager Funeral Home in Muscoda was in charge of arrangements.
