Mrs Dorothy “Dot” Bishop

Funeral services for Dorothy Bishop were held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Centerville A.M.E. Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Bishop, 84, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Florence Regency Hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Bishop was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Tom and Annie Wright Sutton. She was a lifetime member of Centerville A.M.E. Church where she was also a member of the Senior Choir and fundraiser for the renovation and improvement endeavors of the church.

She received her education at Butler High School and was affiliated with the Class of 1945. She later furthered her studies at Florence-Darlington Technical College in the Nursing curriculum.

In the mid sixties Dorothy became the first African American to be appointed to the U.S. Selective Service Board in Darlington County. She was a forerunner in the areas of civil and human rights with significance and involvement and courage in the genre of voter rights and education.

"Dot" was first married to the late James White Sr. and to this union one son was born. After the death of her husband, Dot married the late Eleazor "Dee" Bishop and to this union four children were born.

During her lifetime she was employed in the Hartsville Area for over 40 years with a majority of her work devoted to the transportation services throughout the Pee Dee Area and State of South Carolina. She was the founder of the Young Ladies Society and also a member of the Northside Garden Club, The Helping Hand Club, NAACP and National Council of Negro Women.

Those left to cherish the loving memories of Dot are one daughter, Dorothy Bonita Bishop; two sons, Travis Mitchell Bishop and Dennis Keith (Valeria) Bishop; nine grandchildren, Olivia D. Bishop, Elizabeth White Benjamin, Nicole Hickman, Dennis K. Bishop, Jr., Collins D. (Beverly) Bishop, James J. Hickman, Timothy T. (Ramona) Hickman, Travis L. Hickman and Virginia Hickman; eighteen great grandchildren; In-laws, Joyce Bishop Gainey, Rubye Bishop (Howard) Davis, Juanita Bishop Jeffery, Ola Mae Bishop, Charlie (Ruby) Bishop and Lawrence White, Sr.; a host of many nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
