Peter Merrihew was in the 4th generation of descent from Josiah Merrihew. Through his paternal grandmother, Sarah Taber, he was 7th generation descent from Francis Cooke of the Mayflower. Through is mother, Elizabeth Spooner, he was 7th generation descent from Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
Son of Amos Merrihew and Elizabeth Spooner, Peter was born January 15, 1770 in the part of Old Dartmouth, Massachusetts which was successively set off as New Bedford (1797), Fairhaven (1812) and Acushnet (1860). His father's home was not far from the "stone bridge" near Acushnet Village, on the Acushnet River, at the head of high tide water from Buzzards Bay.
About 1788, Amos and Elizabeth Merrihew removed with the rest of the family, except for Peter, from Massachusetts to that part of Duchess County, New York then known as "Nine Partners".
Peter had a farm in Acushnet, Mass. off Middle Road in the area of town then known as Long Plain or N. Fairhaven.

Peter was married to Sarah "Sally" Andrews on February 20, 1791 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a farmer by occupation. Peter and Sally had nine children, all of whom lived to adulthood.
