LeRoy A. Bott, 85, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse.
He was born June 12, 1923, in Alexander to John Adam and Sophie (Foos) Bott. He was a 1941 graduate of Alexander High School, a 1945 graduate of York College, York, Neb., with a bachelor of art degree in vocal music and completed his master of divinity degree in 1948 at Bonebrake Seminary (now United Theological Seminary), Dayton, Ohio.
He married Esther Johnson on Aug. 6, 1944. He served churches across Kansas in the United Methodist Church, Earleton-Urbana from 1947 to 1950; Beloit from 1950 to 1953; Pittsburg from 1953 to 1959; Wichita-Westside from 1959 to 1971; Hays district superintendent from 1971 to 1976; and Newton-Salem from 1976 to 1985.
He was honored to be elected a clergy delegate to six General Conferences; five Jurisdictional Conferences; and one World Methodist Council. He served on the executive committee for the proposed building of Friendly Acres (now Asbury Park). He was in service on the Board of Trustees from 1959 until 1982.
Other boards and service during his ministry include: Board of trustees, Hadley Regional Medical Center in Hays (now Hays Medical Center); Board of trustees, Kansas Wesleyan University and Board of trustees for Camp Webster, both of Salina; Board chairman of Lakeside UM Center, Scott City; United Christian Ministries in Higher Education at Fort Hays State University; Board of Pensions; Board of Missions; and Board of Ordained Ministry.
After retirement in 1985, he served as a national trainer for the AARP program of Reminiscence, traveling the United States teaching people how to tell and assist others in telling their life story.
He also was the Kansas West Conference Ombudsman for 10 years.
Survivors include three sons, Ervin and wife, Denise, Newton, Kenneth, Wichita, and Terry and wife, Brenda, Paola; a daughter, Charlotte Rathke and husband, Eric, Hays; a brother, Carl Bott, Dighton; a sister, Ruth Ann Wright, Monmouth, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther in 2004; and his parents.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Salem United Methodist Church, Newton; burial in Restlawn Gardens of Memory, Newton.
