Elizabeth Mitchell Adams was one of seven children born to John M. Mitchell and Harriett Wilson Mitchell. The family moved from Potosi, Missouri to what is now Winkler County, Texas in 1899. John M. Mitchell worked for his mother and stepfather, Alex Birchfield and Elizabeth Mitchell Birchfield as a cowboy. Later he homesteaded land near the Birchfield Ranch in Winkler County and became a rancher himself.

At the time they moved to Texas, there were four children moved with them, G.P. 'Pink', John M. 'Tobe', Jr, Alex 'Eck' and Elizabeth Mitchell Adams. Three daughters were born after they moved to Texas, Mary Jane 'Mollie' Mitchell Williams, Maggie Mitchell Sullivan and Zoe Mitchell Bell.

John M. Mitchell, Sr died in 1909. His widow Harriett Mitchell and the children continued to live in West Texas. She retained ownership in the ranchland, but moved into Monahans, Ward County, Texas to provide access to schools for the children. They were true pioneer ranchers who moved into untamed land and helped develop towns and counties where none existed when they arrived.
