Rev. and Mrs. Hubert Lee 3127 Airline Ave., Saturday were presented medals and awards including the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for their late son Pfc. Steve D. Lee, who was killed last August while serving in Vietnam.
The Bronze Star was for heroism when his unit came under enemy fire and a number of members of his unit were wounded.
The commendation says that he "left the relative security of his position to aid his wounded comrades."
"As he maneuvered from one position to another Pfc. Lee administered his injured comrades first aid and then moved them to safety. Moments later the unit began to move to the other side of the hill to minimize the effect of the enemy fire."
"Pfc. Lee again courageously exposed himself to the hostile fire to gather medical supplies and other materials left behind. As he completed his mission, Pfc. Lee was mortally wounded as he moved to rejoin his comrades in their new position."
Also presented to his parents were his Purple Heart; Good Conduct Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Ribbon; Sharp Shooters Badge, with mortar and rifle bars, and the Marksman Badge with authentic rifle and pistol bars.
The soldier was a 1964 graduate of West High School, had been employed by Barber-Coleman Co., and was taking courses at Rock Valley College and the Illinois Baptist Institute, Washington, Ill., before entering service.
