KERRVILLE — Services for William H. "Bill" Fleming, 96, of Kerrville, who died Monday in a local hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville with Chaplain Wilfred F. Bigott of the Veterans Administration Medical Center officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville.
Mr. Fleming was the last soldier from the Kerrville area to have served in the famed 36th Division during World War 1. Born near Rosebud Sept 24, 1894, Mr. Fleming came to Kerrville in 1911 to live with his uncle at Turtle Creek.
He worked as a ranch hand. He enlisted in the United States Army June 30,1917, leaving for Fort Worth where he was assigned to Company 1, 141st Infantry, 36th Division. The company left Texas Aug. 10, 1918, for Brest, France. On Oct. 8, 1918, the troops went "over the top" into Germany as pan of a night patrol.
They continued on into Switzerland then to the Mediterranean. On May 22, 1919, they started home on a German coal burning freighter, reaching New York June 3. Mr. Fleming returned to Texas and on July 4,1919, was discharged at Camp Travis and returned to Kerrville by train. He was awarded a Purple Heart about 10 years ago for injuries received during the first World War. He married Doris Barton, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barton of Turtle Creek Aug. 18, 1920.
The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August 1990. She resides at a nursing home in Fredericksburg.
Other survivors include two grandsons, Kenneth Eakin of Flagstaff, Ariz, and Darrell Eakin of Buchanan Dam; and five great- granddaughters, Kimberly, Christie and Leslie Eakin of Buchanan Dam and Christie and Melissa Eakin of Flagstaff; one sister, Addie Tiroff of Vernon; two nephews, Sonny Radford of Waco and D.H. Radford of Holly; a sister-in-law and brother- in-law, Clarabelle and Ross Snodgrass of Kerrville; and a son-in-law, Russell Eakin of Austin.
Also surviving are Jan Eakin of Buchanan Dam and Brenda Eakin of Flagstaff.
Pallbearers are Arlie James of Fredericksburg, Grant Rogers of Ingram and George Holekamp, Jasper Henderson and Mardis Barton, all of Kerrville. Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Chancy of Lampasas, David Snodgrass, Leroy Klein, Hugo Real, Louis Strohacker, Ross Snodgrass, Julius Neunhoffer and Hardin Tobin, all of Kerrville. Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville is in charge of arrangements.
