Private Robert L. Jennings, age 21, was the first Gresham man to die in World War II. He was the only child of Jimmie and Jennie Jennings of Gresham.

Private Jennings was born December 18, 1920. He attended public school and high school in Gresham. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces on April 8, 1941 and was attached to a bombing squadron in the Phillipines. He served for a time as a military policeman.

Pvt. Jennings was killed in action at Ft. Stotsenburg (Clark Air Base)in the initial bombardment of the Phillipine Islands. News of Pearl Harbor had reached U.S. forces in the Philippine Islands less than half an hour after the attack (about 2:30 A.M., December 8, in the Philippines, corresponding to 8:00 A.M., December 7, in Hawaii. Nine hours later, unopposed Japanese planes attacked the base in the Phillipines, killing many soldiers.

Pvt. Robert L. Jennings who gave his life in the service of his community and country, was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
