CLEVELAND, Va. James Dudley Smith, 90, of passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, in
Russell County Medical Center. Born May 13,1921, he was the son of the late Walter and Mabel Shell Smith. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carie Rasnake Smith; his sisters, Ethel, Beulah,
Kathleen, Maude and Edith; and his brothers, Claude Taze and Leeman. He was the last surviving member of his
immediate family. Dudley was a fifth generation farmer in The Sinkholes section of Russell County. Dudley took
great pride in his livestock and showed great kindness to all of his animals. Dudley's greatest pride was in his
children and grandchildren. Dudley was affectionately named Papaw Tob by his grandchildren and prided himself on selecting a
special nickname for each grandchild. He is survived by two daughters, Gail Gilbert and husband, Don, and Jean McDonald and
husband, Lovell; five grandchildren, Chris McDonald and wife, Linda, Heather McDonald-Taylor and husband, Jonathan, Tracy
Setser and husband, James, Jennifer Couch and husband, William and Gordon Holmes; six great-grandchildren, Kelsey and
Allyson Setser, Sage Holmes, Eli and Asher Taylor and Sam McDonald; and one great-great-grandchild, Riley Setser. Pallbearers
will be Chris McDonald, Jonathan Taylor, Eli Taylor, Gordon Holmes, James Setser, William Couch Jr, Tom Smith, Charles
Leonard and Lester Rasnake. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Owens Funeral Service
Chapel with the Rev Doug Odle officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery in the Ivy Ridge section of Cleveland.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday after 6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
Cleveland Lifesaving Crew, PO Box 129, Cleveland Va. 24225. Owens Funeral Service, Lebanon, is in charge of arrangements
