John "Johannas" moved to Mifflin County in the early part of the nineteenth century. The area he settled in is now Walker, Juniata County. His family was one of about ten families which left Berks County with the hope of finding new homes and new opportunities. It is believed that the family of Stephen Kauffman was in this group, but soon thereafter returned to Berks County. Names of other families that migrated at this time are Maust, Miller, Seiber, and Renno.
John had a family of fifteen children, one preceded him in death. After his death most of the children changed the spelling of Speicher to Spicher. The children of Michael, grandson of John, further anglicized the surname by spelling it Spiker. Michael moved to New Castle, PA. John's widow survived him by 40 years.
