Charles McClung McVey was born March 17 1805 in Knox County, Tennessee to John C and Rachel McVey. In 1825 Charles was the first of his family to leave Tennessee and move to Illinois. His seven brothers, followed in 1826-1831 to settle east of "Coup's Mound". September 16, 1828 Charles married Susan Ann 'Susannah' Harris in Green County, IL. Charles purchased land in 1830 in Macoupin County, IL and moved his family. Four of his children, John L, Samuel M., Elizabeth and William Riley were born in Macoupin County, IL. Before 1836, Charles with his family and brother Edley sold their land and moved to Missouri. The 1836 Iowa State Census finds them in Des Moines, Iowa with 7 in the family. In 1854, the census finds them in Franklin, Lee County, Iowa with 12 in the family. There they stayed until Charles' death in 1873.
