Msgr. Hruby was ordained on June 11, 1918 by Bishop Taber of Saint Paul. He served at St. Stanislaus in Saint Paul and St. Wenceslaus in Cedar Rapids before being appointed the first pastor of Saint Ludmila's parish in Cedar Rapids in 1922, where he remained for the rest of his life.
He planted a wide variety of trees on the parish grounds, including trees that were not common to the area - such as Carpathian Walnut trees. He was appointed the supreme chaplin of the Catholic Workman association. Msgr. Hruby was appointed a Domestic Prelate on May 31, 1954, and he also served on the matrimonium court and building commission for the Archdiocese. Msgr. Hurby was very highly regarded not only in the parish, but in the larger community as well. He died in his sleep on Sept 30, 1960.
