War pilot later taught at Berwick and Vo-Tech
Harold F. Beck, 93, of West Front Street, Berwick, ended his pilgrimage in this life at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2011, in Orangeville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, under the loving care of his family.
Born in Berwick Sept. 10, 1917, he was a son of the late Raymond and Edna Hutton Beck.
He graduated from Berwick High School.
He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a fighter pilot, who flew 76 missions over Europe. He retired after 28 years in the Air Reserves.
He later taught auto mechanics at Berwick High School, and carpentry at Columbia Montour Vo-Tech. He also operated his own construction business.
Harold was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Berwick, and the VFW Post, Berwick.
A pastime of his was hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Harold will be remembered by his wife of 67 years, the former Elsie June Drothler; three children: Beck Dows, Berwick; Harold F. Beck II and wife Pat, Berwick, and Sharon Slowick and husband Jerry, Slowick Hill Road, Berwick; four grandchildren: Jessica Dows, Kailin Slowick, Andrea Bartlett and husband Gene, and Christopher Beck and wife Katie; two great-grandchildren: Joshua Bartlett and Liam Beck; and a brother: Donald Beck and wife Verda Mae, Beaver Springs, Pa. "Forever in our hearts."
A service to honor Harold's life and faith will be held Friday at noon from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1600 Fowler Ave., Berwick, with the Rev. John R. Koons, his pastor, presiding. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Calling hours are Friday 10:30 a.m. to noon in the church.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the "General Fund" of the church.
