Julie Young Duncan, 45, died suddenly on April 23, 2011. A memorial service will be held at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ on Friday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m.

Julie was born on August 6, 1965 to Joe and Linda Young of Des Moines, Iowa. She attended school at Hanawalt Elementary and Merrill Junior High and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Julie began her college studies at St. Olaf College and graduated from the University of Iowa.

Julie enjoyed working with college students and on college campuses. She believed in the importance of education. Her positions had the common theme of helping college students get an education. She began working at Valley Bank in the student lending area, and then moved to Lawrence, Kansas to work for SallieMae in student lending. Julie returned to Des Moines and held positions at Drake University and Des Moines University. She then moved on to positions at companies involved in textbook sales to college campuses.

Julie met her love, Matt Duncan, and they married on July 23, 2005. She became a young widow upon Matt's death on June 11, 2009.

Julie was a completely genuine and warm human being who cared deeply about her family and friends. She shared a close friendship and connection with her mother, Linda, and her sister, Cheryl. Julie was a devoted aunt who supported her niece, Olivia, and her nephew, Jackson. Julie volunteered and delivered meals to homebound on holidays, accompanied by Jackson and Olivia, to instill in them her belief in helping those less fortunate. Julie attended all the sports and school programs she could, loving Jackson's baseball and basketball games. Recently she had been helping Olivia learn to drive. Only a week earlier, she cheered Olivia on in the Roosevelt Shark's Pageant, and cheer she could! Julie had a vibrant presence with a beautiful and radiant smile. Her laughter was loud and contagious, something we will all remember. She had a great sense of humor, and, like her father, loved a good joke.

Julie was fun to be with. She was intelligent, conversant, and intuitive. She enjoyed reading poetry, telling stories and sharing stories with others. She was kind, with a gentle heart and a tenderness that reached out to everyone. She loved her friends and was often saying how much she appreciated their help and support. Thanks to all of you who have been by her side the past few years.

Julie loved tennis. She played competitively during her school years and then again for several years as part of team tennis at Aspen Club. She also loved and adored all animals, especially cats. She knew no animal as a stranger and saved the lives of many cats over the years, including her current loves Ivan and Ira.

Julie is survived by her mother, Linda Young, her sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and David Dahlquist, her niece and nephew, Olivia and Jackson Dahlquist, all of Des Moines. She is also survived by her parents-in-law, Randy and Paula Duncan; brothers-in-law, Jed and Scott Duncan and their families. She was preceded in death by her father, Joe D. Young, and her husband, Matt Duncan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League.

Julie, you will always be loved and forever missed. May you find joy and peace, together with the ones you love.
