CPL John Mooney was killed in action on 7 January 1967 in Kien Hoa, South Vietnam when a hand grenade fell from the belt clip of a fellow soldier into the helicopter in which they were flying. When CPL Mooney observed the live grenade in the aircraft, he attempted to retrieve it and suffered the full impact of the explosion.

CPL Mooney was survived by two daughters, one son, and two sisters.

CPL Mooney is listed on panel 13E, Line 123 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
