NEAL, Charles “Charlie” W. - Age 85, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 1998 in a local care center. He was born November 19, 1912 in Roseburg, Oregon to Thomas and Ida (Park) Neal.

He was united in marriage to Lois Doreen Shrum, June 10, 1935 in Vancouver, Washington. Mr Neal started with the US Forest Service on the Diamond Lake Ranger District in 1930. In 1941 he joined the Oregon State Police in Medford, Oregon. In 1950 he returned to Roseburg and formed C. W. Neal Logging, which began the first salvage operation on the Umpqua National Forest. In 1960 he joined the Douglas County Assessors Office as a land and property appraiser. In 1970 he returned to Medford as an appraiser of forest lands for Jackson County. Mr. Neal retired in 1972 and moved to Lebanon, Oregon.

Retirement not agreeing with Charlie, he returned to the Diamond Lake Ranger District, where he worked seasonally as a fire prevention technician until 1989, at age 79. After 17 years in Lebanon he returned to Roseburg.

Charlie was a descendent of the Pioneer Neal Family who immigrated to the Oregon Territory in 1844.

For recreation he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the great outdoors. His hobbies included music, art and was an avid drawer of cartoons of his own design. He also researched family genealogy.

Survivors include his wife, Doreen of Roseburg, Oregon, daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Sam Long of Umpqua, Oregon, Linda and Myron Rogstad of Rhododendron, Oregon, Ida and Ken Pheiffer of Eugene, Oregon, sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Lucy Neal of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and John “Bill” Neal of Talent, Oregon, 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, daughter-in-law, and a great-grandson.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 7, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Roseburg, Oregon. Final resting place will be in Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
