Remains of Little Clara Rivers Found in Barge Canal — Funeral This Afternoon....
Recover Body Of Child From Barge Canal
After a continuous search for two months the body of little Clara Louise Rivers was found yesterday morning in the Barge Canal at a point where Fulmer's Creek at Mohawk empties into the Barge Canal.
The State dredge has been at work just east of the mouth of Fulmer Creek in the Barge Canal and no doubt caused the body to rise to the surface, where it was discovered by one of the barge employes, Nicholas Morrell.
Coroner B. B. Manion was notified and the body, which showed the effects of its long submersion, was taken to Whiter's undertaking parlors.
The child is survived by her mother, Mrs. Clara A. Rivers, and two brothers, who have had the sympathy of the entire community in their sad loss and have realized the strain under which they have suffered since the child lost its life. Since that time the child's grandfather, A. A. Rivers, and other relatives, together with the police department and the public works department under the direction of Division Superintendent Edward Shaffer, have continued a search and have done all in their power to locate the body of the little girl.
The funeral services over the remains were held from the parlors of the Whiter Funeral Co. this afternoon. The Rev. D. W. Lyman conducted the services. Many floral tributes were received from the neighbors and friends of the family. The bearers were members of the family and burial was made in Armory Hill Cemetery. Ilion, March 13. -–The drowning of little Clara Louise Rivers, the 6-year-old daughter of Mrs. Clara Rivers of 61 West street, which occurred yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock in Steel's [sic] Creek just north of the Second street bridge, was such a deplorable affair that the people of the village experienced deep sorrow and their hearts went out in sympathy for the bereaved family.
The child, who attended the Morgan Street School, was in the 2-B grade, and after school, with her brother Harry and others, went to the creek, which is about opposite their home and while playing she lost her hat and was bending over to get it, when she fell in and as the creek is very high and there being a strong current the child was suddenly swept down the stream at a rapid rate and to rescue her was beyond any efforts so fast was the tiny body carried along.
When the accident occurred a general alarm was sent out and soon after Chief Huck, Officers Babcock and Edwards were on the scene and with the help of many who were attracted at the scene a search was made for the body, but without result. The mother, who was notified, hurried to the scene and was frantic with grief. Dragging the Barge Canal until late that night was continued, but the body still remained in the icy waters. The body was first seen going down Steele's Creek by Mr. and Mrs. Christina of West Main street and Mrs. Daniel Ferguson, who lives near the Ilion Lumber Company, saw it pass West Main street, and that was the last seen of the child. Men were hurried to Railroad street, where the Barge Canal crosses, but were unable to find the body.
It was late last night when the searching work was abandoned and it was again started this morning, when row boats were engaged and a search was made all along the Barge.
The family have had more than its burden of trouble and grief during the past few years. It was six years ago last fall when Mr. Rivers lost his life in an auto accident in North Ilion and the next January the child who was drowned was born and shortly after one of the sons was afflicted with infantile paralysis and to-day shows the effects of this dreaded disease. Those who will miss the little one and mourn her most deeply are the mother and two brothers, Alonzo, aged 10 years, and Harry, aged 8 years.
