Mr. Jarvis was born at Ballater, Scotland August 25, 1860, but had lived for the greater part of his life in this country.
For teen years he was treasurer of the New York State Granit Dealers' Association. For the last six years he was secretary and treasurer of the Odd Fellows' Building Association and was affiliated with various fraternal, civic and business organizations.
He is survived by his wife, his mother, four brothers, one sister and two daughters, Mrs. William R. Cross, of New York City and Mrs. R. P. Evans of Dade City, Florida and three sons, Charles, Harold and Leon Jarvis. Herkimer Citizen, April 6, 1920
Shauna Williams Bishop of the Ilion Free Public Library posted: There has been talk recently about a professional cleaning for the Civil War Soldiers' Monument at the base of Benedict Ave. In a previous post the man that designed and built the monument was mentioned, but now a face can be put to that name. This is a photo of Alexander Jarvis from 1914, who ran a monument and gravestone business on E. Main Street in Ilion, approximately where the Remington Arms Museum is located today. In 1906 his monument honoring the soldiers of the Civil War was dedicated in an elaborate ceremony. In addition to this monument, many of the gravestones from the first two decades of the twentieth century can be attributed to the meticulous work of Alexander Jarvis. He died in 1920 and was survived by his wife Rachael, two daughters and three sons, Charles, Harold, and Leon. The second son, Harold, was the grandfather of NASA Space Shuttle engineer/astronaut Greg Jarvis who perished in the tragic mission back in 1986. Harold's son, Alexander Bruce Jarvis, was Greg's father. Thus, this would make Alexander Jarvis the monument builder, the great-grandfather of Greg Jarvis.
