HANCOCK, N. H., Feb. 28 - Mrs. Lilla Cabot Perry, well known painter and author of Boston, and the mother-in-law of Joseph Clark Grew, United Sates ambassador to Japan, died here today [28 Feb 1933] at the age of 85. Mrs. Perry, who was born in Boston, maintained a residence there at 312 Malboro street. She studied painting in Boston and Paris at Julian's and Colarossi's studios in 1887, following her marriage in 1874 to Thomas Sergeant Perry, an author, who died in 1928. Her first pictures were exhibited at the Paris salon in 1889, and three years later she took a silver medal for her canvases at the Massachusetts Mechanics' Exposition. Later she was awarded bronze medals at the St. Louis exposition in 1904, and at the Panama exposition of 1915. She also was the author of several books of poetry, including "From the garden of Hellas," "The Heart of the Weed." and others. Mrs. Perry, who was the daughter of Dr. Samuel Cabot, noted physician, leaves three daughters, Mrs. Grew, and Miss Margaret Perry, and Mrs. Edward Valentine of Hancock, N.H.
