DIED – At Macksburg, Washington County, on Friday, August 8th, 1862;
Miss AMANDA JANE ATKINSON, daughter of Isaac and Hannah Atkinson formerly of Monroe County.
Some eight hours previous to her decease she was in the enjoyment of perfect health, all was gaiety and sunshine with her. In her anxiety to do some work speedily, she unfortunately took up a can of Carbon Oil and was using it in kindling the fire. By some means the oil in the can was ignited and a terrible explosion followed, completely enveloping her in a sheet of flame.
The few hours that she was permitted to live, in the most terrible suffering, were spent by her in assuring her parents of the peace and joy that awaited her beyond the dark valley, and in exhorting her young friends to be prepared for a like hasty summons to the mansion of bliss.
